This month marks the beginning of National Smile Month – a campaign run by the British Dental Health
Foundation, to educate people on how they can take better care of their teeth. Good oral hygiene can have many great
benefits – from reducing the chances of gum disease to giving you a beautiful,
pearly white smile.
A Little Goes a Long
Way
Making that conscious effort to clean your teeth properly,
could be one way to make them last longer. If you want to know how to take care
better care of your teeth, a dentist will be able to advise you on things like
the right positions for brushing your teeth. For example, brushing your teeth
quickly simply won’t do the trick – however if you take the time to floss
between as many teeth as possible and adapt a generous routine, you will have a
better chance of reducing common mouth problems such as, tooth decay.
If you find it difficult cleaning your teeth because they
are too tight together, you can use interdental brushes. They are designed to clean between teeth
which are positioned too close together. They will allow you to floss your
teeth effectively, to prevent the build-up of plaque and tartar.
To help you further,
here are 5 top tips for a healthy mouth:
1.
Limit coffee and tea, as caffeine can stain your
teeth, making them appear yellow
2.
Chew sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva, which
will prevent your mouth from drying out
4.
Use a mouthwash which contains an anti-bacterial
properties to help control gum disease
5.
Stop smoking, so that you prevent the likeliness
of serious oral problems such as, tooth decay, gum disease and worst of all –
mouth cancer
Taking good care of your teeth will not only give you a nice
smile, but it will control other problems such as bad breath. This is caused by the build-up of food that
is rotting in your teeth and around your gums and tongue. Bad breath is unpleasant, and if you do not
clean your teeth properly it could result in a whole host of problems.
Visiting a Dentist
Seeing your dentist regularly will reassure you of your oral
well-being, providing you are taking good care of them in your own time, every
day too. Your dentist is a trained professional, who will be able to thoroughly
examine your teeth, and assess the condition they are in. They will be able to advise you appropriately
on any care or treatment plans to improve your oral hygiene. For example, some dentists may even suggest
orthodontic treatment to straighten your teeth, if you have gapped or crooked
teeth.
Orthodontic treatment involves the use of braces, which work
to straighten your teeth into a better position, so that your teeth are
correctly aligned. This will help you to chew better – and most importantly, will
allow you to clean your teeth a lot easier.
Smile Spa offer orthodontic treatment for braces, and can
provide regular dental check-ups to all patients. For more information you can visit smilespauk.com
